Juror’s Statement
The process of jurying a show can be a daunting prospect. Sifting through some 200 images, a juror could easily lose their way and end up with a collection of objects that are compelling on a case-by-case basis but fail to hang together in any cohesive way, which results in a schizophrenic exhibition. Providing a theme in the call for entries should help the process, unless you’re like me and can rationalize virtually every submission’s merit based on the theme of Either/Or. While that would be very inclusive, it makes for a gigantic show with works crammed together, resulting in dirty looks and curses hurled at the juror from the installation and curatorial staff . That isn’t really jurying at all. Back to square one.
In the end, the work selected was that which I found technically compelling and which reflected process and material choices that stretched the boundaries of the theme of Either/Or. With few exceptions, I tended away from works that merely illustrated ideas of opposition, selection, and choice. Instead, I looked for pieces that utilized formal and material elements as an avenue to evoke and embody the theme of Either/Or. In a handful of cases I included multiple pieces by an artist when the arc of their work served to strengthen the overall theme of the exhibition.
As an artist, educator, and curator, I am continually impressed by the high quality of artistic production in our region. I very much appreciate the opportunity to look at such a broad range of work and commend not only those artists who’s work is included in the exhibition, but every artist who took the time and care to put together an application and engage in the ongoing artistic discourse of our region.
