It’s all about the process at Union Street Gallery. During January and February thinking and making, or “process” will be explored. Union Street Gallery is excited to share “process” both the conceptual and studio practice by professional artists with its audience.
The Gallery is hosting several exhibits exploring “process”: “16 Studio Artists”, solo exhibit by John Gutierrez, MFA, “Altered Couture”, and participatory interactive community art project. “process” opens Friday, January 9 and continues through February 26. Special evening events are Friday, January 9 and Friday, February 13 from 6-9pm. Mark your calendars for an evening of “process” and be an active participant!
16 Studio Artists exhibit works in the annex galleries. The artists will shed light on the often misunderstood practice providing insights into their processes through artist statements.
In the main central gallery, featured artist, John Gutierrez, MFA, will be exhibiting works that employ “writing as painting” as a process. The central gallery will display small intimate works employing media such as ballpoint pen, graphite, gesso, hair, and botanicals. The nexus will be a two story script-based installation. The mezzanine gallery provides works in process by several artist groups and opportunities for visitors to participate in making collaborative works of art. Individuals as well as groups are encouraged to become part of the community art project.
As part of the process theme, "Altered Couture" Exhibit features clothing transformed by artists. Join Dorita Fuller, Studio Artist, Labyrinth Designer, Weaver, and Textile Designer for an interactive discussion on transforming an item from your closet. The 1st Annual Plain Black Turtleneck Sweater Challenge happens Saturday, January 31, 1:30-3pm. Discussion includes conceptual and material processes for reinventing textiles. $5 donation requested for this event.
