It’s all about the process at Union Street Gallery. During January and February thinking and making, or “process” will be explored. Union Street Gallery is excited to share “process” both the conceptual and studio practice of professional artists with its audience.
The mezzanine gallery provides works in process by several artist groups and opportunities for visitors to participate in making collaborative works of art. Individuals as well as groups are encouraged to become part of the community art project.
How to get involved?
Come into the Gallery. Bring a friend if you like. Or bring a group. Beginning Friday, January 9th at 6pm community members will be encouraged to explore art materials on hand in making art. There is no right or wrong, no have to's. Come out to be a part of the artistic community. Meet others who are exploring.
Everyone is encouraged to return as much as they wish to continue the process throughout January and February.
Art supplies will be on hand or you may wish to bring your own art supplies. Dry media only. Pencils, pens, markers, chalk, charcoal, photos, writings, etc.
Bring a small scale object for the wall sculpture.
Photos of the process will be online at regular intervals.
"I Am A Contribution" is the motto at Union Street Gallery.
More on collaborative community projects
We would like to invite each of you to add your own images to our several works in progress on wall panels on the mezzanine.
The works are evolving day by day with each new visitor’s contribution, and your ideas and images are valuable and necessary to the success of our ongoing projects.
We hope everyone will join in this collaborative creative process with a spirit of fun and a love of play, and without judgment of your own work or of anyone else’s.
As the works develop, it is possible that some earlier images may be changed, marked over, or even obliterated. Many may simply be extended and grow larger, more complex, or totally enveloped within another image.
This open-ended and light-hearted approach of various artists using a previous artist’s work as the starting point for their own, transforming it and moving it along to a new stage of completion with their additions to it is actually a popular technique employed by many artists, students, writers and musicians.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the group of artists, writers and poets known as the Surrealists used this technique to illustrate their interest in dreams and the subconscious thought and through it would generate fascinating works of art.
The concepts of the constancy of change and the thrill of unexpected combinations of images were two of the very appealing aspects of this approach.
We believe everyone has the heart of an artist, and we encourage you to share your visions with all of us. Your marks – whether they are literal or abstract, pictures, words or symbols – mean something to you and represent your time you spent here with us. We know your contributions to our wall panels will help them grow and touch even more visitors to our gallery. We also hope you’ll come back again and see how the works have been transformed since your earlier visit.
THANK YOU FOR HAVING FUN WITH US AND SHARING YOUR VISIONS!
