From Marikay Peter Witlock: “My love for wild places, water, mountains and woods began with a move to Maryland in 1978. Living 2 hours from the Appalachians and 2 hours from the Chesapeake Bay was incredible for a girl from the flatlands of Illinois. Years of hiking and backpacking in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania connected me to the land in ways nothing else had. Three large scale paintings Potomac Overlook Summer, Autumn and Winter were my love letters of farewell to the region when I moved back to Illinois in the late 1980’s. The Potomac Overlook views the Potomac River at one of its wildest places near Great Falls, Virginia. This spot is along “Billy Goat Trail”, apply named for its rocky challenge to hikers. Rafters and kayakers find great challenge here, or give it up all together and carry their vessels along the rocky shore. The Overlook in Winter is particularly introspective and captured my mood of lament for leaving the Region. Painting the place in 3 seasons was the beginning of my career long interest in series paintings that repeat the same scene in different moods, seasons, and lighting.
This painting was purchased for the First Christian Church, Chicago Heights, where it hung in a meeting/meditation area for many years. When the church dissolved, the artwork returned to the donating family who now graciously donate the work to Union Street Gallery as a fundraiser challenge on the eve of the Gallery’s 30 year Anniversary.”
